Buttweld 45° Elbows

Buttweld 45° Elbow Manufacturer, Supplier & Exporter

Buttweld 45° Elbows ASME B16.9 — stainless, carbon & alloy steel — Raaj Fittings

A buttweld 45° elbow changes the direction of a pipeline by 45°. Raaj Fittings manufactures and exports 45° elbows to ASME B16.9 in stainless steel, duplex and super duplex, nickel alloys, carbon steel and alloy steel, in seamless and welded construction, with bevelled ends for butt welding.

Buttweld 45° elbows are made with a long radius — a centreline radius of 1.5 times the nominal size — so the change of direction is gentle and the pressure drop is lower than with a 90° elbow. They are used to offset a line around obstructions, to slope lines for drainage, and in pairs with 90° elbows for more complex routing.

Every elbow is supplied with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates, with 3.2 certification on request.

We export 45° elbows to EPC contractors, refineries and stockists across the Middle East and GCC, Europe and the Americas — to ASME B16.9 for US and Gulf projects, or EN 10253 / DIN dimensions for European specifications, with PED-compliant supply on request.

Carbon Steel 45° Elbows

Carbon steel is the most widely specified material for general-purpose, hydrocarbon, and elevated-temperature service. The primary grade is ASTM A234 WPB for standard service. For high-yield pipeline fittings, we supply ASTM A860 WPHY grades to MSS SP-75.

Standard carbon steel; primary grade for general-purpose process piping buttweld fittings

Impact-tested carbon steel for low-temperature service down to -46°C (-50°F); LNG and cryogenic piping

High-yield pipeline fittings to MSS SP-75; used in high-pressure oil, gas, and liquid transmission pipelines

Alloy Steel 45° Elbows

Chromium-molybdenum alloy steel buttweld fittings are specified for high-temperature, high-pressure service in power generation, petrochemical, and refinery applications. All grades supplied to ASTM A234 specification.

(5% Cr · ½% Mo) Refinery high-temperature service; hydrotreating and catalytic reforming units

(9% Cr · 1% Mo) High-temperature hydrogen-rich process service and steam piping

(1¼% Cr · ½% Mo) Thermal power plant steam, feedwater, and reheat piping

(9% Cr · 1% Mo · V · Nb) Ultra-supercritical steam power plant main steam and hot reheat piping

Why Use a 45° Elbow?

Not every change of direction needs a full right angle. A 45° elbow lets a line step sideways or up and down with a much smaller disturbance to the flow than a 90° long radius elbow. Its centre-to-end dimension is short — about 64 mm for a 4" elbow — so it fits neatly into most layouts.

  • Offsets — two 45° elbows step a line sideways around a column, beam or other pipe.
  • Lower pressure drop — less turbulence than a 90° turn, useful in long or high-flow lines.
  • Drain and vent slopes — 45° runs help gravity drainage and avoid low points.
  • Branch connections — combined with a lateral tee for a smooth 45° branch.

Specifying a 45° Elbow

Give the size, the wall thickness or schedule of the connecting pipe, the material grade and whether seamless or welded construction is required. For example: 6" SCH 40 45° LR elbow, ASTM A234 WPB, seamless. Elbows to EN 10253 or DIN 2605 are specified by outside diameter and wall thickness in millimetres.

Other Angles

Standard buttweld elbows are made in 45° and 90°. Where a tighter 90° turn is needed, a 90° short radius elbow can be used. Elbows for other angles can be cut from 90° elbows or supplied to order.

Applications & Industries

  • Process piping offsets in refineries, petrochemical and gas plants
  • Slurry, solids-handling and high-velocity lines where low turbulence matters
  • Drain, vent and flare headers sloped for drainage
  • Power plant steam and water piping
  • Offshore and seawater systems in duplex and super duplex
  • Water transmission and treatment pipelines

Because 45° elbows are used so widely for offsets, they are among the most frequently stocked buttweld fittings on maintenance and shutdown projects, and are often ordered together with 90° elbows of the same size, schedule and grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

45° Elbows — FAQs

A 45° elbow changes pipe direction by 45°. It is used to offset lines around obstructions, to slope drain and vent lines, and wherever a gentler turn than 90° gives lower pressure drop.

ASME B16.9 45° elbows are long radius, with a centreline radius of 1.5 times the nominal pipe size.

It is much shorter than a 90° elbow — for example about 35 mm for a 2" elbow and 64 mm for a 4" elbow. Exact values are tabulated in ASME B16.9.

It is possible on site, but a factory-made 45° elbow has correct dimensions, bevelled ends and full material traceability, and is normally required by piping specifications.

Stainless steel (ASTM A403), carbon steel (A234 WPB, A420 WPL6, A860 WPHY), alloy steel (A234 WP5 to WP91), duplex, super duplex and nickel alloys.

Yes. We supply 45° elbows for projects under the European Pressure Equipment Directive (PED 2014/68/EU), and with IBR certification for Indian boiler applications. NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliant material is also available on request for sour service in the Middle East and the Americas.
