EN 10253 is the European standard for butt-welding pipe fittings: elbows, return bends, tees, reducers and caps. It is used on projects designed to European codes and for European plant and equipment, with metric dimensions and European steel grades. The standard has four parts, of which EN 10253-1 and EN 10253-2 cover carbon and alloy steel fittings.
Raaj Fittings manufactures fittings to EN 10253-1 and EN 10253-2 at our two plants in India, for European and international buyers.
| Part | Scope |
|---|---|
| EN 10253-1 | Wrought carbon steel fittings for general use, without specific inspection requirements |
| EN 10253-2 | Non-alloy and ferritic alloy steel fittings with specific inspection requirements, for pressure equipment |
| EN 10253-3 | Wrought austenitic and austenitic-ferritic (duplex) stainless steel fittings without specific inspection requirements |
| EN 10253-4 | Wrought austenitic and austenitic-ferritic stainless steel fittings with specific inspection requirements |
EN 10253-2 distinguishes Type A fittings, whose wall thickness at the ends equals the pipe but which have a reduced pressure factor, from Type B fittings, which are designed for the full pressure of the connected pipe, with extra wall thickness where needed. Type B fittings are the usual choice for pressure equipment under the Pressure Equipment Directive.
EN 10253-2 fittings are made in European grades such as P235GH and P265GH carbon steel, P265NL and P355NL1 for low temperatures, and 16Mo3, 13CrMo4-5 and 10CrMo9-10 alloy steels. Dimensions are metric (outside diameter × wall thickness), for example 114.3 × 3.6.
Outside diameters for the common sizes are the same as ASME pipe sizes, but wall thicknesses, some centre-to-end dimensions and the materials differ. Order to the standard of your piping specification; for PED projects, state the required EN 10204 certificate type.
Every EN 10253 fitting is made from PMI-verified material, dimensionally inspected against the ordered standard and marked with material, size, rating and heat number. Orders are supplied with EN 10204 3.1 certificates; EN 10204 3.2 certification and inspection by the buyer's nominated third-party agency are available on request.
EN 10253-1 covers carbon steel fittings for general use without specific inspection; EN 10253-2 covers carbon and ferritic alloy steel fittings with specific inspection requirements for pressure equipment.
A Type B fitting is designed for the full pressure of the connected pipe, with extra wall thickness where necessary. Type A fittings have a reduced pressure factor.
Common grades include P235GH, P265GH, P265NL, 16Mo3 and 13CrMo4-5, selected to match the pipe.
Outside diameters often match, but wall thicknesses, some dimensions and materials differ, so fittings should be ordered to the standard of the piping specification.
