SAE J514 is the SAE standard for hydraulic tube fittings, best known for the JIC 37° flare fitting. The tube end is flared to 37° and clamped between the cone of the fitting body and a sleeve by the nut, giving a metal-to-metal seal that is easy to assemble, re-make and inspect. JIC fittings are the standard on American-built hydraulic equipment and are widely used worldwide; ISO 8434-2 covers the equivalent international design.
Raaj Fittings machines SAE J514 37° flare fittings at our two plants in India in stainless steel and carbon steel, in unions, elbows, tees, connectors, bulkheads and adapters. See our flare fittings range.
Because the seal is metal-to-metal, no O-ring or sealant is needed on the flare, and the joint can be broken and re-made many times.
JIC fittings are sized by "dash" numbers in sixteenths of an inch of tube OD: -4 is ¼", -6 is ⅜", -8 is ½", -12 is ¾" and -16 is 1". The flare end uses UNF straight threads; the other end can be a JIC flare, an NPT or BSP thread, or a straight-thread O-ring boss port.
37° JIC flares are for hydraulic pressures; 45° (SAE) flares are used for lower-pressure fuel, refrigeration and automotive lines. The two angles must never be mixed in one joint.
Every JIC fitting is made from PMI-verified material, dimensionally inspected against the ordered standard and marked with material, size, rating and heat number. Orders are supplied with EN 10204 3.1 certificates; EN 10204 3.2 certification and inspection by the buyer's nominated third-party agency are available on request.
JIC stands for the Joint Industry Council, which standardised the 37° flare fitting now covered by SAE J514 and, internationally, ISO 8434-2.
Dash sizes are tube OD in sixteenths of an inch, so a -8 fitting is for ½" OD tube; -4 is ¼" and -12 is ¾".
No. The cone angles differ, so a 37° flare will not seal on a 45° seat or vice versa.
No sealant is used on the flare: the seal is metal-to-metal. Pipe-thread port ends (NPT, BSPT) still need sealant, and O-ring boss ports seal with an O-ring.
