API 6A (ISO 10423) is the American Petroleum Institute specification for wellhead and christmas tree equipment, including the flanges, spools, adapters and blind flanges used on wells and high-pressure production manifolds. Its flanges are rated by working pressure, from 2,000 to 20,000 psi, and come in two families, Type 6B and Type 6BX, sealed with metal ring gaskets.
Raaj Fittings manufactures flanges to API 6A dimensions at our two plants in India for oil and gas customers. If your order requires API-monogrammed equipment, tell us at the enquiry stage so that we can confirm exactly what can be supplied.
| Rated working pressure | Flange type |
|---|---|
| 2,000 / 3,000 psi | Type 6B (6BX in larger sizes) |
| 5,000 psi | Type 6B (smaller sizes) or 6BX (larger sizes) |
| 10,000 / 15,000 / 20,000 psi | Type 6BX |
Type 6B flanges use R or RX ring gaskets and are made up with a standoff between faces. Type 6BX flanges use BX ring gaskets and are designed for face-to-face contact. See API 6B and 6BX flanges for the differences.
API 6A flanges are made from low-alloy steels such as AISI 4130 and 8630 modified, heat treated to the required strength, from stainless steels for corrosive service, and, in sour or highly corrosive service, with corrosion-resistant alloy overlays in the ring grooves and wetted areas.
Every API 6A flange is made from PMI-verified material, dimensionally inspected against the ordered standard and marked with material, size, rating and heat number. Orders are supplied with EN 10204 3.1 certificates; EN 10204 3.2 certification and inspection by the buyer's nominated third-party agency are available on request.
API 6A flanges are rated for 2,000, 3,000, 5,000, 10,000, 15,000 and 20,000 psi working pressure.
API 6A flanges are designed for wellhead and christmas tree equipment, rated by working pressure in psi and sealed with metal ring gaskets; ASME B16.5 flanges are rated by class for general piping. Their dimensions are different.
Product specification level (PSL 1 to 4) defines how much testing, inspection and documentation the equipment receives; higher levels are used for more critical wells.
Tell us at the enquiry stage if your order requires API-monogrammed equipment, and we will confirm what can be supplied for your application.
