What Is Pipe Bend?
A crucial component of the piping system is the pipe bend. The pressure changes are lessened as a result. What Are Different Types Of Pipe Bend?
There are four Different Types Of Pipe Bend:

  • 90 degree stub up bend- It is the most commonly used L-shaped bend.
  • Back to back bend- It is a U-shaped bend that helps to fit a pipe between two parallel surfaces.
  • Offset bend- This is made of two bends of equal degrees but in opposite directions.
  • Three point saddle bend- It helps to move around the obstacle of the pipe

What Is The Difference Between A Bend And A Bent?
A bent refers to the angle at which the given pipe is folded to produce the pipe bend, whereas a bend is a piece of piping equipment that helps to minimise pressure.

Pipe Bend Manufacturing Process
Cold bending or hot bending techniques are used to create pipe bends. The cold bending process mostly uses brute force to help the pipe assume its ultimate shape. The hot bending technique uses heat to lessen the overall strain placed on the pipe. The following types of cold bending are used:

  • Rotary Draw Bending- The pipe is bent by using a combination of dies and other equipment which works in a rotary action.
  • Mandrel Bending- here a mandrel is placed inside the pipe for preventing any defects that might occur during the bending process.
  • Compression Bending- Here a stationary die is used, and a counter die bends the pipe around the stationary die.
  • Roll Bending- The pipes are passed through three rollers which are in a pyramid configuration to achieve the desired shape.

In order to obtain the desired bend, pressure—which is considerably less—is applied after an induction heating coil has heated the pipe.

Mandrel method (Hot Forming)

Pipe Bend

  • One of the most popular methods for manufacturing elbows from pipe is the mandrel method, which is a kind of hot forming process.
  • This method involves breaking the pipe into pieces and pushing it with the aid of a hydraulic ram. An induction heating coil is used to heat the pipe, which is then pushed over a die known as a "mandrel." This process enables the pipe to both expand and bend at the same time.
  • With this technique, elbows of various diameters can be produced.
