The MSS SP 44 Flanges' pipe sizes range from 26" to 60", and their dimensions, forms, and sizes can be altered to meet particular needs. The basic standard for MSS SP 44 Flanges is based on ladle analysis, which states that CE should not exceed the 0.48 percent threshold without the purchaser's prior approvals and that the maximum carbon content is 0.3 percent. In case the CE exceeds 0.45% in the MSS SP 44 Flange, then it is essential to mark the flange with the actual CE result. Also, the tests conducted by MSS SP 44 Flanges need to be as per the ASTM A370 specifications.

The class 150 flange and class 600 flange of MSS SP 44 differ in that the class 150 flange can tolerate a higher pressure than the class 600 flange. The strength of the flange increases with increasing pressure ratings.

Difference Between MSS SP 44 Series A and B flanges?
The main differences Between MSS SP 44 Series A and B flanges would include:

  • The series A flanges are thicker than series B, even if they are of the same size and pressure rating.
  • The series A flanges are capable of withstanding more external loading compared to the series B flanges.
  • The series B flanges need smaller but more fasteners compared to series A.
  • Series B comes with a smaller bolt circle diameter and hence they have smaller flange movements post installation.
  • Only series A flange has a Ring Type Joint flange from pressure class 600 to 900 of the given standard.
  • Series B flanges are more affordable than the series A flanges.
  • The series A flanges are primarily used in new pipelines or equipment, whereas the series B flanges are most often used in replacements and non-critical piping jobs.

According to the standards established in MSS Standard Practice SP-25, flanges must be labelled. In addition, the letter PL must come before the level sign. The grade sign on the weld neck flange denotes the material grade of the weld flange neck.

Impact testing is not required for grades F42 and below. At a maximum temperature of -45°C (-50°F), one set (three specimens) from each steel sheet must pass the test and display a minimum average of 27J (20ft-lb) and a minimum individual value of 20J. (15 ft-lb).

Grades of MSS SP-42 F42 and higher must be normalised, normalised, and tempered, quenched, and tempered, or precipitation treated and aged. Grade F36 flanges of Class 400 and higher must be annealed, normalised, normalised and tempered, or quenched and tempered in accordance with ASTM A961. The minimum tempering temperature, however, is 540°C (1000°F).
