Stub end are offered in three different ways, type A, B and C.

Type A

The Type A Stubs End is utilised for joining flanges that are standard. The nominal thickness of the pipe wall is at least as thick as the Stubs end lap thickness. The outer corner radius of kind A will also be affected by the lap joint flange.

Type B

For typical slip-on flanges, the Type B Stubs End serves as a lap flange. These short ends have lap thicknesses that are larger than or equal to the nominal thickness of the pipe wall. Furthermore, the slip o flange that will be utilised as a backup flange can be accepted because type B's outer corner radius is so small.

Type C

The Type C Stubs End will be put on the flange and utilised with typical lap joint flanges. At the inner diameter of the lap, it flares and has a rounded edge. The radius will be generated, if necessary, as closely as possible to a square. The pipe wall thickness is one-seventh the thickness of the lap. Any backup flange can fit within the kind C because of its suitable length.

During the field installation of piping systems, the "loose" Flange concept of a Lap Joint is quite helpful. One flange that may be rotated is particularly helpful for aligning the bolt holes before the introduction of the stub bolt and the related nuts when two spools are to be connected in the field. The capability of simpler orientation and alignment of bolt holes is especially helpful if there is a spool that must be removed regularly if positive isolation is a process requirement.
